Message from Alumni Relations

Dear Alumnus,

Our primary role is to establish and maintain an ongoing relationship between UKZN and its graduates, both locally and internationally, that will result in alumni support for university affairs and activities and be of positive benefit to graduates.

In 2025, we have had the pleasure of engaging with our graduates through a blend of online platforms as well as face-to-face interactions. It has been wonderful to meet graduates at events and be able to travel to various parts of South Africa. Events began with the Durban Alumni Association AGM, followed by a series of informative and entertaining talks and outings.

In addition, an Alumni Relations team visited Cape Town in March hosting events for our Western Cape-based alumni. We also coordinated lunches in Hilton and Richards Bay in order to interact with our KZN Midlands-based and North Coast-based alumni. A number of small lunches were held in KwaZulu-Natal and these were immensely popular, enabling guests to interact with each other and to brainstorm ways of how they could possibly benefit UKZN. The much-anticipated annual weekend alumnus getaway will take place at The Cutty Sark Hotel on the KZN South Coast in November ‒ it is fully subscribed as usual.

More than 100 webinars have been emailed to alumni and posted on the social sites on behalf of the University’s four Colleges and various units/divisions. The alumni Facebook page and Twitter (now X) site have seen an impressive increase in the number of followers, which now stands at about 9 500 on Facebook and 1 818 with Twitter. The four international (country-specific) alumni Facebook sites have also registered increases in numbers. (Please let us know if you would like to join these groups).

There has been considerable interest in the main Facebook page for all alumni – please like us! E-mail alumni@ukzn.ac.za  or MbheleA2@ukzn.ac.za  should you require further information on how to join. The alumni LinkedIn page has been closed so join us now on the UKZN LinkedIn page.

The alumni database is continually updated and the number of current records stands at  207 971 comprising 197 002 alumni within South Africa and 10 969 abroad. This number will soon increase when the September 2025 graduates are added to the database.

Alumni Relations has planned an exciting and informative range of activities for 2026 which includes a variety of events in South Africa and outside the country’s borders. The introduction of campus tours was immediately very popular when started two years ago and these will continue to be arranged as requested.

A calendar of events will be placed on our Alumni website in January 2026 and everyone is encouraged to diarise happenings taking place near them – we look forward to meeting as many alumni as possible.

In order to keep updated about university events, we urge all graduates to continue to update their contact information when changes occur ‒ email:  alumni@ukzn.ac.za  or the website.

With our very best wishes,

The Alumni Relations Team
