COMMUNIQUÉ FROM THE OFFICE OF THE REGISTRAR
NOTICE OF UKZN CONVOCATION 15TH ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING 2024

In accordance with the University Statute and Section 9.1.1. of the Constitution of the Convocation of the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), NOTICE OF THE 15TH ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING (AGM) OF THE CONVOCATION OF THE UNIVERSITY OF KWAZULU-NATAL IS HEREBY GIVEN. THE AGM WILL BE HELD VIRTUALLY AS FOLLOWS:

AGENDA 

  1. Opening and Welcome by Convocation President.
  2. Notice convening the meeting.
  3. Attendance and apologies.
  4. Confirmation of the Minutes of the 14th Annual General Meeting (AGM) held on 24 May 2023 (as reconvened).
  5. Report of the President of Convocation.
  6. Report of the Treasurer of Convocation.
  7. Report of the UKZN Vice-Chancellor and Principal.
  8. Motions for consideration at the AGM* (if any).
  9. Closure.

Meetings of Convocation are restricted to members of Convocation and in order to facilitate online access to the meeting of 19 June 2024, members are required to register for this purpose by no later than 16h00 on Sunday, 2 June 2024 using the following link: https://forms.office.com/r/f0Tfxyd3Hf

This deadline will be strictly applied, and is necessary for the purpose of validating all those who registered to attend the AGM.  Details of the link to the AGM will be sent to all validated members by latest Monday, 17 June 2024

* Any motion for consideration at the AGM must be in writing, and lodged with the Registrar (registrar@ukzn.ac.za) by no later than 16h30 on 5 June 2024.  Each motion shall be signed by the proposer and the seconder, both of whom, or in their absence, their proxy, must be present in the AGM virtual platform, to speak to the motion.

Qiniso Mlita

President of Convocation

Dr Qiniso Mlita holds a Bsc degree in Medical Science from the University of Zululand; a Bsc (Hons) in Biochemistry from the University of Zululand; as well as a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, from the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

Thabani Wiseman Mkhize

Convocation Rep. on Council

Mr. Thabani Mkhize is an experienced executive with over 10 years public sector experience in Public Policy, Strategic Management and Monitoring & Evaluation. He is currently acting as Chief Director: Business Support Services in the KZN Department of Agriculture and Rural Development. 

Zama Zindela

Ms Zama Zindela is a specialist manager for special projects in the KwaZulu Natal Legislature, Office of the Speaker. She has acted as the Office Manager in the same office. 

Siphile Buthelezi

Mr. Siphile Buthelezi is the Managing (1) Director and Head of Corporate/Commercial at Buthelezi Vilakazi Inc, (2) Chairman of KwaZulu Natal Growth Fund (3) Chairman of the Board of Ekupholeni Mental Health and Trauma Center, (4) Convocation Member of the University of KwaZulu Natal and (5) Chairman of Siphile Group with interests in Logistics, Property, Construction and Ambulance Services and Security. 

Mpumelelo Phungula

Mr. Mpumelelo Phungula is a dedicated public servant with 10 years of work experience in the public service having begun his career as an Intern up until he broke into the management echelons in 2015. He has previously worked as a Refugee Status Determination Officer and a Refugee Reception Officer respectively at the Department of Home Affairs. 

Sandile Terrance Ngcobo

Mr. Sandile Terrance Ngcobo is a graduate of the UKZN, he holds a BA in Media Studies and Political Science and a BA Honours in Media and Cultural Studies. He has equally travelled and studied abroad at the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Drake University (USA). 

Mandlenkosi Khumalo

Convocation representative on Council

Mr. Mandlenkosi Khumalo known as Nesh was elected to Convocation at the 2021 Convocation AGM. He also serves as a Convocation representative on Council.

Sanele Mthembu

Sanele French Mthembu is originally from Empangeni. He moved to Durban to study at UKZN
towards a bachelor’s degree in social sciences. During this period, he was fortunate to be able to
travel to other countries such as Malaysia and Germany. 

Sphesihle Xulu

Sphesihle Xulu is currently an admitted attorney of the High Court and founder and director of Pearl
Xulu Attorneys, a Law firm specialising in Civil and Criminal Litigation and particularly Damages
Claims.
