Mr Lawrence Monyahi

Lawrence Monyahi is part of Umtapo Family since 2000 where he started as a volunteer at the Peace Afrika Youth Centre (Umtapo satellite office in Limpopo). Lawrence is currently the Deputy Secretary General of the South African National Association Tertiary Cooperative which represents South African cooperatives at the International Cooperatives Alliance.

Ms Diana Buttu

Topic:  The failure of the UN as a Global Institution for Peace and Human Rights

Diana Buttu is a Palestinian lawyer and analyst, specializing in negotiations, international law, and international Human Rights law. Buttu is a former legal advisor to the Palestine Liberation Organization and Palestinian negotiators, and Policy Advisor to Al-Shabaka: The Palestinian Policy Network. She was also recently a fellow at the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government.

After earning a law degree from Queen’s University in Canada and a Masters of Law from Stanford University, Buttu moved to Palestine in 2000. She continues to speak out, working with journalists with the Institute for Middle East Understanding (IMEU) and teaching at Birzeit University.

Professor Steven Thrasher

The Palestinian Genocide and the rise of fascism has exposed the divide between Western white supremacy and the Global South

Steven Thrasher is an acclaimed journalist and author of The Viral Underclass: The Human Toll When Inequality and Disease Collide. His forthcoming book is called The Overseer Class: Representation as Repression. He is a journalism professor at the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University and is chair of social justice in reporting.

Thrasher had reported on the Black Lives Matter movement for many years. His research combines journalistic and ethnographic methods to study how racism, homophobia, policing, medicine, incarceration, culture, and health intersect.   Professor Thrasher was one of four professors charged by Northwestern Police earlier this year for their alleged roles in a standoff with police at the pro-Palestinian student camp on campus. The charges were dropped but he has been suspended from the university and is under investigation.
