UKZN DAA Tour: Inanda Heritage Route – Saturday, 21 October 2023
You are cordially invited to join us on the tour of the Inanda Heritage Route led by a professional tour guide – Bongani Mthembu.
We will start the morning by touring the Mahatma Gandhi House and adjoining buildings in the Phoenix Settlement. Inspired by a Trappist community and John Ruskin’s book, Mahatma Gandhi established the Phoenix Settlement, a communal living system in 1904. Today, Phoenix Settlement comprises Gandhi’s house, the former printing press (now housing the Inanda Tourism office), Manilal Gandhi’s house and the Phoenix Interpretation Centre.
After touring the Phoenix Settlement, we will then move to the Ohlange Institute, which is a historic educational institution located in Inanda. Founded in 1900 by John Dube, an influential South African leader and the first president of the African National Congress (ANC). Ohlange Institute holds a prominent place in the country’s history as one of the earliest educational centers for black Africans during the era of apartheid. The Dube Museum and the Mandela Voting Station will also be visited. The latter is a historic venue as it is here where President Nelson Mandela cast his vote in South Africa’s first democratic election.
The visit to Ohlange Institute will be followed by a trip to the Lucy Lindley Hall which is a notable building located within the Inanda Seminary School, a prestigious girls’ boarding school situated in Inanda. This institution has been providing quality education to young women since its founding in 1869. Lucy Lindley Hall is named in honor of a prominent benefactor of the school and stands as a symbol of Inanda Seminary’s commitment to academic excellence and personal development. The hall is not only a place for educational activities but also serves as a hub for various cultural and social events within the school community.
The tour will conclude with an optional lunch at Under the Moon Restaurant (this is for your own account) – a very popular and highly recommended restaurant within the area.
