You are cordially invited to join us on the tour of the old St.Thomas Anglican Church led by Colonel Pat Acutt.

The Acutt family has been intimately involved with St Thomas church both old and new for well over 100 years. In old St Thomas one of the stained-glass windows was put in by Pat Acutt’s great-great-grandfather. A tour of St Thomas takes one into the early days of Durban. For example, George Cato, the first mayor is buried there.

St. Thomas Anglican Church traces its origins back to the mid-19th century when it was established to serve the Anglican community in Durban. The church was founded in 1864, with the mission of providing spiritual guidance and support to the growing population of British settlers and residents.

Throughout its history, St. Thomas Church has undergone several transformations and relocations to accommodate its expanding congregation and changing needs. The longstanding building, located in Peter Mokaba (Ridge) Road on the Berea stands as a testament to the enduring presence of Anglicanism in Durban.

Over the years, St. Thomas Church has played a vital role in the social, cultural, and religious life of Durban. It has been a centre for worship, community engagement, and charitable activities, fostering a sense of belonging and camaraderie among its members and the wider community.

After the tour of old St Thomas everyone is invited to have tea and cake at the St Thomas Church in Musgrave Road (next to St Clements) at no cost. However, people are welcome to give a donation for church funds. Directions to the church carpark and tea venue will be explained to everyone before departing from the tour of the old St Thomas.
