The University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) Alumni Relations hosted a special alumni lunch for graduates based in the Pietermaritzburg/Midlands area on Saturday, 30 August 2025, at the centrally situated ANEW Hotel Hilton.
The event brought together a diverse group of alumni, providing an opportunity to reconnect with old classmates, strengthen professional networks, and engage with the University community. Guests were warmly welcomed by the Alumni Relations Manager: Mr Finn Christensen. Christensen also introduced the two Guest Speakers: Dr Qiniso Mlita: President of Convocation and Prof Naven Chetty: College Dean of Teaching and Learning within the College of Agriculture, Engineering and Science.
Dr Mlita provided a very comprehensive overview of the current developments and future plans of the University – highlighting Project Renewal and the importance of all graduates giving back to their alma mater in any way that they can. Mlita elaborated on the role of the Convocation Executive and the numerous and important high-level initiatives and duties they have successfully achieved.
A highlight of the afternoon was a special address by Professor Naven Chetty: College Dean of Teaching and Learning within his College. Professor Chetty shared thought-provoking insights on the future of STEM education in South Africa, noting that the country stands at a pivotal juncture in its transformation journey.
In his address, he stressed the urgent need to bridge the gap between academic research, innovation, and the dynamic needs of industry – a critical factor for both economic development and social progress. Professor Chetty also highlighted scalable models, successful policy interventions, and actionable frameworks that can help ensure STEM education in South Africa remains inclusive, innovative, and aligned with 21st-Century industrial demands. His message resonated strongly with attendees, many of whom are professionals working across diverse sectors.
The Anew Hotel Hilton setting offered an elegant atmosphere, with hearty conversation, shared memories, and new connections. Alumni expressed their appreciation for the initiative, noting how such events reaffirm their lifelong bond with UKZN.
